Duck a l’Orange

This image is a perfect example of visualizing a photograph before ever pressing the shutter. I had been photographing a group of wood duck drakes for several days, and I couldn’t stop thinking about capturing one framed by the fiery orange reflection of a nearby tree. After scouting the area, I found the ideal spot where the light hit the water just right. I settled into the shallow, frigid water, hoping my patience would pay off. Hours passed, and with my legs numb from the cold water and lack of movement, a drake finally paddled into view, gliding across the glowing reflection. That fleeting moment resulted in this striking image—one that made every minute of my patience, and discomfort, absolutely worth it.
